HISTORY:

Newton Schner Jr AKA Lebenessenz is a composer and pianist in the neoclassical romantic and minimalist styles of music.  He began his career in 2004, and has released excellent albums such as "Le Besoin Perpetuel" (2005), "Tu, Deorum Hominumque Tyranne, Amor" (2009) and "Tage der Nostalgie" (2011), to name but a few…

ANALYSIS:

The early LEBENSESSENZ releases were made on a "do it yourself" basis. Newton had released most of his releases independently. This meant that many of his albums were unreachable to his potential fanbase, the lovers of instrumental music.

Träume is his first album released on a national record label (Hammer of Damnation) and finally he now has the mandate to increase the reach of this sublime project across the country and beyond.

The album opens with the track "Ponta Grossa", which is undoubtedly one of the finest songs he has ever written, as well as being a homage to his hometown.  You could say that Träume also brings you into Lebenessenz’s own history.

Reading Knausgaard" is a natural continuation of the album, and a tribute for the famous Norwegian author Karl Ove Knausgaard whose works include “Out of the World” and “A Time for Everything” The transition between music and literature is an interesting fusion of styles on this record.

"Rio Grande, August 2013" is one of the most melancholy songs on the album, and also the shortest, being of unique beauty, it manages to stand out among other tracks like "Polina" and "Nur Die Traume Sind Frei" which are also memorable.

"Island" is the closing track of the album and possesses elements that together with the sonority of the piano, bring the listener to the end of this inspired journey.

HIGH POINTS:

The album is very good overall. But there is no denying the beauty of "Ponta Grossa",  which is certainly the high point on this LEBENSESSENZ album.

Also worthy of note is the album artwork. It may be a simple digipack, but with beautiful illustrations by Mario Eiberger it is transformed into a true work of art.

Perhaps the only grumble is the absence of a booklet, where some sleeve notes from Newton and some additional artwork could have enriched this work even more.

FINAL VEREDICT:

"Träume" delivers what few musical works can actually achieve. It can transport the listener to the world created by the composer. An album of simple proposal but with a great atmosphere, an album for the fans and undoubtedly, the greatest meisterwerk created by LEBENSESSENZ so far
